It is easy to see why the sport of Team Handball is so popular. It is a sport that mixes together many of the elements of basketball, netball, and soccer. It combines all of these sports together for a great competition. Handball is played inside, and the size of the court is equal to the size of two basketball courts. There is a 9 feet wide by 6 ½ feet high net at the end of each court. If the ball makes it into the net, a goal is scored. The ball weights 16 ounces for men and 13 ounces for women.
Here’s where the fun part comes in; players can pass the ball and dribble the ball but they must follow strict rules. No double-dribbles, no holding the ball for more than 3 seconds, and players can only take three steps after they catch a ball. There is a 20 foot safety zone around the goal which players cannot step into. However, if they jump above the safety area and shoot while still in the air, it is legal. The ideal team has 10 players and 2 goalies. Seven players are played at one time (6 on court 1 in the goal) with substitutions allowed at any time.
Another unique aspect in the sport of Handball is that a player is only warned after the first penalty. After that, a player will receive two minute sit outs for penalties 3, 4, and 5. For the next penalty, they may be excluded and could not be replaced by another player. This gives the team without the excluded player an advantage. Handball is played in two 30 minute halves with a 10 minute break in between.
